Viré-Clessé 2018

Viré-Clessé, Burgundy

Chanson’s regional wine, Viré Clessé is one of the best white wines of the region, combining suppleness and minerality. The appellation lies in the heart of the Mâcon appellation in the south of Burgundy. The two villages, Viré and Clessé form a unique terroir on south-east facing slopes. In Viré, the soil is chalky with large layers of clay. In Clessé, the soil structure is slightly different, with a combination of chalk and clay mixed with liasic marls combined with oyster-fossils, giving the wine an underlying minerality. It’s produced from a combination of Chardonnay and Chardonnay Muscaté grapes.

WINEMAKING

The wine is for the most part left alone, as the philosophy is one of “infusion rather than construction.” The wine is vinified 100% whole cluster to extract a deeper color and enhance the structure and aromatic complexity. The major condition is that the grapes must be perfect in terms of ripeness and condition. Chanson also strives to maximize the preservation of fresh fruit characteristics, which is why grapes are chilled immediately on arrival in a proprietary tunnel that provides a very quick chill with no oxygen exposure. Then, Champagne-style fractional pressing is practiced to gently extract the purest juice. Oak is used conservatively, with no more than 20% for the whites.

VINTAGE

Jean-Pierre Confuron, Chanson’s winemaker, describes the 2018 vintage as follows: “an extraordinary vintage in every sense. The growing season veered from too wet to too hot and finally too dry, which made deciding when to pick a real challenge. We ultimately decided to begin on the 1st of September with our domaine vineyards. Yields were quite variable though overall quite good and potential alcohols were also varied at between 13 and 14.5%. As we usually do, the vinifications were done using 100% whole clusters for all the wines, save for the Nuits villages because it was hailed on, and thankfully, there were no difficulties with stoppages.”

Overall we can say that the wines produced in 2018 express the richness and pleasantness of the vintage while keeping the elegance and the balance that Domaine Chanson is known for.

"Juiciness with elegance"

Wine Enthusiast - July 10, 2020 "A gentle note of freshness, made up of lemon and Mirabelle, characterizes the nose on this wine. Hints of cold butter and chalk add nuance. The palate is rounded, ripe but beautifully balanced, carrying its juiciness with elegance."

Other Wines by this Producer

Savigny-Les-Beaune 1er Cru Hauts Marconnets Domaine

White wines are very unusual in Savigny-Les-Beaune. The vineyards mainly produce red wines. However, Chanson decided to plant Chardonnay here too because of the particular nature of the soil. The wine shows aromas of exotic fruit mixed with floral fragrances.

Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos

Chablis, Burgundy

“Les Clos” is one of the most famous Grand Crus of Chablis. The area of production covers 24.75 hectares. The vines selected by Chanson are ideally located right in the heart of the plot. The upper part brings the minerality and the lower part gives a right character to the wine.

Beaune Clos due Roi 1er Cru Domaine

The vineyard of “Clos du Roi” is located below “Les Marconnets” on a fold in the hill. Chanson owns around 7.5 acres (approximately 35% of the total vineyard area). 2/3 of Chanson’s vines are planted with Pinot Noir. The plot is low on the slope and known to produce elegant, stylish wines for relatively easy drinking.

Savigny-Dominode 1er Cru Domaine

Savigny-Les-Beaune, Burgundy

Savigny is a modest little village in the Cote de Beaune. Savigny is known for being the most divided areas in Burgundy with its 22 Premier Cru vineyards located on one of two sides; the Pernard side and the Mont Battois side. The Premier Cru of Dominode is the best Premier Cru of Savigny. It’s mid-slope with great clay and limestone soil.

Santenay-Beauregard 1er Cru Domaine

Santenay-Beauregard, Burgundy

Chanson owns 3 hectares in this area, located in the Premiers Crus area of Santenay, a small village in the South of the Côte de Beaune. The plot is at the top of the hill and is positioned on two levels. The large proportion of stones gives to the wine a very special minerality which emphasizes the typicality of the Pinot Noir.

Beaune Clos des Féves 1er Cru Domaine

Beaune, Burgundy

Clos de Fèves is a Chanson “monopole” located in the very heart of the Premier Cru vineyards of Beaune. The vineyard, covering 9.4 acres, is located on mid-slope. It makes a complete, rounded wine, with striking depth and minerality.

Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Les Vergelesses Domaine

Pernand-Vergelesses, Burgundy

Chanson owns a vineyard of 5.4 hectares in Premier Cru “Les Vergelesses.” The plot is located in a hollow at the bottom of the hill of Corton and its clay and limestone sol combination gives wines a very specific structure.

Gevrey-Chambertin La Perriere 1er Cru

Gevrey-Chambertin, Burgundy

Gevrey Chambertin is the most famous appellation of the “Côte de Nuits” and the climat “La Perrière” is located in the heart of the Premier Cru area. The grapes are sourced from a partner winegrower but are picked by members of the Chanson team.

Beaune Clos des Mouches Blanc 1er Cru Domaine

Chanson is one of the major owners of Clos des Mouches with a vineyard of 4.5 hectares. This is a sunny terroir which benefits from an ideal location on the hill at the southern end of the vineyards of Beaune on a spur pointing towards Pommard. A plot of 2 hectares on the upper side of the hill is planted with Chardonnay on a limestone subsoil covered with sand.

Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Les Caradeux Domaine

Pernand-Vergelesses, Burgundy

This vineyard of 1.90 hectare is ideally located on mid-slope close to the hill of Corton-Charlemagne. Same soil structure and height as its famous neighbor. The only difference is the East exposure of the “Caradeux” which makes of this plot an exceptional “terroir” providing unique mineral characteristics.
