Les Folatières takes its name, it is believed, from Les Folles Terres, a reference to the steep slopes and demanding terrain that have always made this one of Puligny’s most challenging and rewarding parcels to farm. Sitting directly alongside Le Montrachet and Chevalier-Montrachet on the south-east facing slopes, it is prestigious company by any measure. Domaine Chanson’s 0.3-hectare parcel is planted to Chardonnay on silt, marl, and limestone, with a high proportion of clay that drives a specific minerality and underlines the typicity of the variety. Vines are planted at regular spacing to allow deep ploughing of the soil, a practice that encourages root depth and the kind of concentrated, site-driven character that defines this celebrated climat. Pale gold in color, it opens with floral fragrances, pale-fleshed fruit, and citrus, with a delicate minerality running through a complex, elegant palate of refined texture and a long, refreshing finish.
VINEYARD
Les Folatières is ideally positioned on the south-east facing slopes of Puligny-Montrachet, directly adjacent to the celebrated Le Montrachet and Chevalier-Montrachet. Domaine Chanson's 0.3-hectare parcel is planted to Chardonnay on silt, marl, and limestone, with a high proportion of clay that gives the wine a specific minerality and reinforces the typicity of the variety. Vines are planted at regular spacing from each other to allow deep ploughing of the soil, encouraging root depth and the concentrated, site-driven character that defines this celebrated climat.
WINEMAKING
Hand-picked in small crates, followed by meticulous sorting. Whole bunch pressing for gentle extraction. Fermentation in barrel at low temperature for 15 to 20 days, favoring aromatic complexity and freshness. Aged on fine lees in French oak barrels, 20% new, ranging from one to six years old, in Domaine Chanson's 15th-century Bastion cellar. Careful selection of coopers and toast used to bring out the best in each terroir. Bottled according to the lunar calendar.
VINTAGE
2022 brought marked temperature swings through January and February before spring settled in with mild conditions. A cold snap in April gave way to warm May temperatures, but water stress through the season was significant and never fully offset by June storms. Summer brought several prolonged heat waves, with welcome relief arriving only at the end of August. Harvest ran from August 30 to September 13, yielding a generous vintage both in volume and quality. The white wines are well-balanced, precise, and refreshing.
TASTING NOTE
Pale gold. Floral fragrances with pale-fleshed fruit and citrus on a delicate minerality. Complex and elegant on the palate, with a refined texture, beautiful fruit, and a long, refreshing finish with a hint of minerality.
