Givry is one of the most celebrated villages in the Côte Chalonnaise, the southern stretch of Burgundy that produces some of the region’s most honest and characterful Pinot Noir. Domaine Chanson’s Givry is planted on east-facing clay and limestone soils and aged 18 months in French oak, a commitment of time that brings depth and structure to a wine that is nonetheless fresh, bright, and approachable. Deep ruby with purple nuances, it opens with fragrances of peony and ripe red berries, with a hint of spice leading to a well-balanced, complex palate of tight texture and well-crafted tannins. A compelling entry point into the Côte Chalonnaise from one of Burgundy’s most historic domaines.
VINEYARD
Givry sits in the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise, the southern stretch of Burgundy that runs from Chagny to Tournus. Domaine Chanson works with two growers who farm 5 acres of east-facing clay and limestone soils in one of the appellation's most celebrated villages. As with all their grower relationships, Chanson's own team harvests the fruit to maintain full control over picking times and fruit quality. The Côte Chalonnaise's slightly warmer, more continental character relative to the Côte d'Or gives Givry a generosity and approachability that make it one of Burgundy's most reliable and rewarding appellations.
WINEMAKING
Careful selection of grapes, followed by partial destemming at 50%. Cold prefermentation maceration for 10 days. Fermentation in small-volume stainless steel tanks, with punch-downs and pump-overs to extract color and aroma. Gentle gravity pressing ensures delicate extraction. Aged on fine lees in French oak barrels, 25% new, ranging from one to six years old.
VINTAGE
2021 opened with a mild winter marked by sharp temperature swings, followed by a spring that arrived with unusual warmth before a sudden, intense frost struck Burgundy in early April, severely damaging buds that had already formed on the vine. The months that followed brought alternating rain and warmth, with humid summer conditions adding further pressure. Harvest began at Chanson on September 15 under bright sunshine, yielding wines of floral freshness and beautiful fruit expression, with volumes notably lower than average.
TASTING NOTE
Deep ruby with purple nuances. Fragrances of peony and ripe red berries with a hint of spice. Well-balanced and complex on the palate, with a tight texture, well-crafted tannins, and a persistent, refreshing finish.
