Casisano
Brunello di Montalcino 2021
Tuscany
Casisano Brunello di Montalcino is an elegant, traditional-style wine from a mid-sized estate in the southern hills of Montalcino, nestled between Sant’ Angelo in Colle and Castelnuovo dell’Abate. Made from 100% Sangiovese Grosso, this wine is a true expression of Montalcino’s terroir, shaped by over 100 years of winemaking passion. The nose opens with floral and spicy aromas, leading to ripe cherry and plum flavors. Hints of dried herbs and earthy undertones provide depth, while vibrant acidity and fine tannins ensure a well-rounded, lasting finish.
VINEYARD
Casisano vineyards, located at a high altitude, ensure natural freshness and complexity typical of great Brunellos that evolve excellently over time. The estate spans 53 hectares: 22 hectares are vineyards, 12 are olive groves. Of the vineyards, 9 hectares produce Brunello, 7 hectares produce Rosso, and 6 hectares are for the Sant’Antimo denomination. The estate is fully planted with Sangiovese Grosso, trained using the traditional Cordon Spur system, divided into ten vineyard sites. From the oldest 2-hectare parcel, we select grapes for our Brunello Riserva Colombaiolo. The planting density is 4,000 vines per hectare, reaching up to 5,000 in the oldest plantings. The average yield is 7,000 kilos per hectare, with grapes selected and picked by hand.
WINEMAKING
Vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks and in wooden, truncated cone-shaped vats. To maintain the characteristics of Sangiovese, all the fermentations are carried out using the native yeasts present on the grapes. Vinification is temperature-controlled, favoring long skin contact.
VINTAGE
The 2021 Montalcino vintage saw a mild, wet winter followed by a cold, rainy spring that delayed budbreak. A hot, dry summer caused drought stress, but late-season rains and cooler nights in August and September balanced ripening. Harvest began in mid-to-late September, with lower yields but high-quality fruit. The wines are expected to be structured, age-worthy, and balanced, with fresh acidity, ripe tannins, and elegance. A vintage of concentration, freshness, and longevity.
TASTING NOTE
Intense ruby in color, it opens with an elegant complexity with characteristic aromas of fresh red fruit and spicy notes. Harmonic to the taste, it has a great tannic structure and excellent acidity.
FOOD PAIRING
Hearty pasta dishes with meat-based sauces like Bolognese or ragù match Brunello's robust character. Best with meat, game and aged cheeses.
