Casisano
Colombaiolo Brunello di Montalcino 2019
Tuscany
Colombaiolo Brunello di Montalcino Riserva comes from a single vineyard at one of the highest and most prestigious altitudes in the southeast of Montalcino. This 4.4-acre plot within Podere Casisano yields a wine that balances structure, elegance, and harmony. Made from 100% Sangiovese Grosso, it showcases a deep ruby color with garnet hues. The complex nose melds ripe fruit with a sweet spiciness from extended aging. On the palate, it offers velvety tannins and a perfect balance of bold structure and refined elegance, finishing fresh and harmonious.
VINEYARD
From specially selected grapes from the finest plot of the Colombaiolo vineyard, one of the highest in the appellation. The Cordon Spur-trained vines have a density of 5,000 plants per hectare, on soil that is rich in galestro (schistous clay) with insertions of sandstone.
WINEMAKING
Fermentation at a controlled temperature of 28-30 degrees Celsius in 70hl wooden vats for 20-25 days, with pumping over daily and long rack and return. Maturation for 4 years; first year in tonneaux of first-pass and the other three years in 19 and 25 hl Slavonian oak casks, followed by bottle-aging for at least 6 months.
VINTAGE
The 2019 vintage in Montalcino is widely regarded as exceptional. A cool, wet spring gave way to a hot, dry summer, with a welcome burst of heavy rain at the end of July easing drought stress. Summer temperatures were moderate by recent standards, rarely exceeding 35°C — a relatively cool season compared to recent scorching years. Cool nights from mid-September slowed ripening beautifully, with some higher-altitude vineyards harvested as late as mid-October. Yields were generous, the largest harvest in Montalcino between 2019 and 2023, yet quality remained outstanding.
TASTING NOTE
A deep, intense ruby with tinges of garnet, it offers a fine, complex nose, in which the fruit combines with a sweet spiciness deriving from its long aging. On the palate it is austere, with ripe, velvety tannins producing excellent balance.

Reviews

Wine Spectator - April 7, 2025 "Round, supple and layered with strawberry, cherry, eucalyptus and mineral flavors, this red tightens up on the finish. Nonetheless, this remains juicy and lively, and the long aftertaste adds notes of sweet spices. Best from 2027 through 2043."

James Suckling - July 24, 2025 "Nutty aromas dominate, with smoky wood, red and black cherries and dried violets. Full-bodied with very good concentration and weight, velvety tannins, crisp acidity, smoky flavors and a long aftertaste. Drink or hold."

Vinous - November 1, 2023 "Grilled herbs and crushed rocks combine with dried black cherries and dusty earth as the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva comes to life in the glass. It opens with a balanced inner sweetness offset by a black tea concentration and tart red berry fruits underscored by saline minerals and brisk acidity. It finishes spicy and with medium length, leaving well-formed tannins and a lingering licorice tinge."

Brunello di Montalcino
Casisano’s Brunello di Montalcino is distinguished by its elegance and its deep ruby red color. It unites potency and refinement and has excellent aging potential. The wine presents a good concentration on the mid-palate and a persistent aftertaste, with a rounded and voluptuous body, and interesting, silky tannins, typical of the prestigious wines of Montalcino.
