Domaine Chanson
Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge 2023
Beaune 1er Cru
Clos des Mouches is one of Beaune’s most celebrated Premier Cru climats, and Domaine Chanson is among its most significant owners, with 4.3 hectares across the site. The Rouge occupies 2 hectares on the southern end of the hill, on a south-east facing spur that points toward Pommard, where limestone subsoil covered with clay produces Pinot Noir of real depth and structure. This is a wine of place: intense, spicy, and complex, with the tight texture and long finish that define a benchmark red Beaune.
VINEYARD
Clos des Mouches sits at the southern end of the Beaune Premier Cru vineyards, on a sun-favored spur of the hill that points toward Pommard. Domaine Chanson owns 4.3 hectares across the climat, making it one of the major proprietors of this storied site. The Rouge occupies 2 hectares, planted to Pinot Noir on limestone subsoil covered with clay. The south-east exposure and the lean, structured soils give the wine its characteristic depth, tight texture, and spicy, fruit-driven character.
WINEMAKING
Hand-picked in small crates, followed by meticulous sorting. Partial destemming at 50%, followed by cooling of the bunches to 8 to 10°C for a 10-day prefermentation cold maceration. Fermentation in small-volume stainless steel tanks, with punch-downs and pump-overs adapted to each appellation to extract color and aroma. Gentle gravity pressing ensures delicate extraction. Aged on fine lees in French oak barrels, 25% new, ranging from one to six years old. Bottled according to the lunar calendar.
VINTAGE
2023 opened with a mild winter before an unstable early spring settled into warm, even very warm temperatures by the end of May, encouraging rapid blossoming in excellent conditions. A water deficit through spring was never fully compensated, and July and August brought successive heat waves and storms. A final surge of heat at the end of August, reaching around 35°C, allowed the grapes to perfect their ripeness ahead of harvest. The wines are expressive, with beautiful aromatics and outstanding structure.
TASTING NOTE
Ruby. Intense aromas of crushed strawberry, raspberry, and cherry with a hint of spice. Complex and well-balanced on the palate, with a tight texture and a long, spicy finish.

Reviews

James Suckling - June 6, 2025 "Delicate aromas of cherries, dried strawberries, cured meat, blood oranges and flowers. The palate is soft and focused, with fine-grained tannins and bright acidity. There's lovely tension and a mineral edge, with a great balance of fruity and savory flavors."

Wine Enthusiast - October 1, 2025 "The nose is shy, showing focused aromas of rose and firm stony minerality, with wild strawberry gently emerging. On the palate, the wine is textured and precise, revealing subtle notes of iodine and white pepper. This wine has much to reveal."
