Wine Press – Red, White & Sparkling Wines Ideal For Thanksgiving (and leftovers)

Mass Live’s wine columnist Ken Ross has offered readers a wine drinking roadmap for Thanksgiving Day and the weekend that follows, including Chateau Montelena and Guigal. He acknowledges that due to the pandemic we may not be celebrating with as many friends or relatives this year, which may leave us with more leftovers than usual, and therefore shares recommendations on different styles of wine to enjoy as the weekend progresses.

One of the white wines he recommends is the Chateau Montelena Napa Valley Chardonnay 2018, adding “I just wanted to make sure I recommended this crisp, flinty and slightly floral Chardonnay from California’s Napa Valley.” Continuing, “there’s a reason this classic white wine is one of the best known and most respected white wines made in California. And I can’t think of a better white wine to recommend for this Thanksgiving.”

Later on in the weekend, he suggests opening a great, food friendly red wine like Guigal Cotes du Rhone Rouge 2016. “This classic red wine from France’s Rhone region never goes out of style. And the 2016 vintage in particular is just as great – if not better – than the outstanding 2015 vintage.” He offers details of the grape breakdown before adding, “you can’t go wrong with this earthy, robust yet smooth red wine for Thanksgiving.”

Chateau Montelena Napa Valley Chardonnay 2018

    Napa Valley, California

A true icon. The Napa Valley Chardonnay is the wine that put Chateau Montelena and Napa Valley at the forefront of the wine world in 1976, in what is now memorialized as “The Judgment of Paris.” To great disbelief, the Chateau Montelena Napa Valley Chardonnay was the top-ranking wine against four white Burgundies and five other California Chardonnays. And as they say, the rest is history.

    E. Guigal

    E. Guigal Côtes du Rhône Rouge 2016

    Cotes du Rhone

Given that this particular wine can be the introduction to the entire Rhône Valley for a drinker, as well as the position they occupy in the Rhône, it is not enough for the Guigals to make a good Côtes du Rhône. They are relentlessly driven to produce a distinctive and outstanding wine that drives interest in exploring the entirety of the Rhône.

    E. Guigal

The more you learn about the Guigal family, the more astounding becomes their story.  Their wines are the benchmarks for every Rhone appellation, and over the last thirty years they have become arguably the most lauded producer in the world.  Year after year the Guigal family produces wines of exceptional quality that in all classes offer exceptional value.

    Chateau Montelena

    Calistoga, Napa Valley, California

In 1976 Chateau Montelena put California at the forefront of the wine world. That year a who's-who of the French wine establishment gathered in Paris for a blind tasting of French and American wines. When the scores were tallied, the top-ranking white wine was Chateau Montelena's 1973 Chardonnay. Montelena today continues to be a quality benchmark in Napa Valley, producing some of the finest Cabernet and Chardonnay in California.
