Le Macchiole

Scrio 2022

Toscana IGT

Trade Tools

Scrio was first produced in 1994. Le Macchiole founder Eugenio Campolmi created it because he wanted to produce a wine that would best express his vision of Syrah, his favorite grape variety. “Scrio” is a Tuscan word that translates to pure, genuine, and honest. It is usually used to refer to people who are pure of heart. This wine certainly has an original personality and stands apart from Syrah grown in France or anywhere else—it is an extraordinarily compelling meld of deep and velvety Mediterranean fruit with cool climate aromatics and detail. Given the extremely limited production, Scrio is decidedly a hidden gem.

VINEYARD

The natural fertility of the soil is mitigated by high-density plantings and weak rootstock, leading to a natural production of only 800-1000 grams of grapes per plant. All phases of work in the vineyard, from the pruning to harvest, are carried out by hand – a great deal of work, as each hectare of vineyard requires 850 hours of work every year.

WINEMAKING

Fermentation and maceration for 20 days in concrete tanks and stoneware amphora, followed by 14 months in tonneaux, conical trunk cask, ceramic and stoneware amphora

VINTAGE

The 2022 Bolgheri vintage began with a dry winter and cool spring, resulting in late bud break and low yields due to water stress. A 75-day drought impacted vine growth, but summer rains helped recovery. September's cool nights allowed the grapes to accumulate sugar, aromas, and tannins, leading to good ripening conditions. Despite the challenges, the vintage produced high-quality wines, with a balance of acidity and ripeness thanks to favorable harvest conditions and careful winemaking.

TASTING NOTE

Plum cake, blueberry, dark chocolate, mocha, and hot stones with a lift of thyme and cedar. Full-bodied, chewy tannins, and a long, spiced finish.

Wine Enthusiast - November 1, 2025 "The nose glistens with aromas of blackberries, blueberries, top soil, new leather and herbs, while the palate is tangy and bouncy with tart berries, plum skin and citrus. Chewy, dense tannins provide structure."

Wine Spectator - July 26, 2025 "A vibrant, intense red, whose blackberry, blueberry, violet and black pepper flavors are driven by vivid acidity. There are dense tannins, too, finely wrought and adding support on the finish. All of the elements dovetail on the harmonious aftertaste."

Jeb Dunnuck - March 18, 2025 "Looking at the single-varietal wines, the 2022 Scrio is a youthful magenta color and is highly perfumed in the glass with aromas of candied flowers, pink peppercorn, dried earth, incense, and fresh red plum. The palate has a more sanguine feel, with savory notes and defined compact tension and structure, bright acidity, balanced energy, and a lovely mouthwatering finish. It‘s only going to improve with time. Drink it over the coming 15 years."

Vinous - February 1, 2025 "The 2022 Scrio, 100% Syrah, is once again more a wine of Le Macchiole than anything else. Perfumed aromatics meld into red cherry/plum fruit, blood orange, espresso and cinnamon. Scrio is not especially varietal, but it is quite beautiful. It is also the most changed wine at Le Macchiole in recent years. There’s lovely precision and class, qualities that make me very curious so see this in more favorable vintages. The 2022 was aged in 500L and 600L barrels (10% new), wood uprights and a touch of ceramic amphora."

Other Wines by this Producer

Paleo Bianco

Bolgheri

First produced in 1991, Paleo Bianco is a silky, mineral-driven blend of Chardonnay (90%) and Sauvignon Blanc (10%). Perfect for pairing with seafood, this white is well suited to a medium to long aging in bottle.

Bolgheri Rosso

Bolgheri

Bolgheri Rosso is a refined, irresistible blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah, serving as an introduction to the estate. The wine is, frankly, almost too good at the price. All the intensive artisanal work that Le Macchiole carries out in its vineyards and cellars benefits this wine, and despite more availability than its Paleo Rosso, Messorio and Scrio siblings, it sells out nearly as quickly.

Paleo Rosso

Toscana IGT

Paleo Rosso has been called Italy's landmark expression of Cabernet Franc. This grape variety is growing internationally as a distinct bottling, but Bolgheri has proven to be the single best place in the world to do so. The Mediterranean climate and surroundings result in a wine of extraordinarily expressive, sensual, and textural fruits and savory spices.

Messorio

Toscana IGT

Messorio, a Merlot monovarietal, is the winery’s crown jewel. Its initial vintage was 1994, and since then it has received extraordinary acclaim, including a 100-point score from the Wine Spectator for the 2004 vintage. The name Messorio refers to the ancient Tuscan practice of wheat harvesting, the most important time of the year in the Bolgheri countryside - once it referred to wheat; these days, it is all about grape harvesting.
