Le Macchiole

Scrio 2022

Toscana IGT

VINTAGE

The 2022 Bolgheri vintage began with a dry winter and cool spring, resulting in late bud break and low yields due to water stress. A 75-day drought impacted vine growth, but summer rains helped recovery. September's cool nights allowed the grapes to accumulate sugar, aromas, and tannins, leading to good ripening conditions. Despite the challenges, the vintage produced high-quality wines, with a balance of acidity and ripeness thanks to favorable harvest conditions and careful winemaking.

Wine Enthusiast - November 1, 2025 "The nose glistens with aromas of blackberries, blueberries, top soil, new leather and herbs, while the palate is tangy and bouncy with tart berries, plum skin and citrus. Chewy, dense tannins provide structure."

Wine Spectator - July 26, 2025 "A vibrant, intense red, whose blackberry, blueberry, violet and black pepper flavors are driven by vivid acidity. There are dense tannins, too, finely wrought and adding support on the finish. All of the elements dovetail on the harmonious aftertaste."

Vinous - February 1, 2025 "The 2022 Scrio, 100% Syrah, is once again more a wine of Le Macchiole than anything else. Perfumed aromatics meld into red cherry/plum fruit, blood orange, espresso and cinnamon. Scrio is not especially varietal, but it is quite beautiful. It is also the most changed wine at Le Macchiole in recent years. There’s lovely precision and class, qualities that make me very curious so see this in more favorable vintages. The 2022 was aged in 500L and 600L barrels (10% new), wood uprights and a touch of ceramic amphora."

James Suckling - July 23, 2025 "A juicy, fruity wine with subtle spices and green peppers. Light-bodied with relatively light-framed tannins, it has a crunchy palate with crisp acidity. The finish is tight and a bit rustic yet savory."

Paleo Bianco

Bolgheri

First produced in 1991, Paleo Bianco is a silky, mineral-driven blend of Chardonnay (90%) and Sauvignon Blanc (10%). Perfect for pairing with seafood, this white is well suited to a medium to long aging in bottle.

Bolgheri Rosso

Bolgheri

Bolgheri Rosso is a refined, irresistible blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah, serving as an introduction to the estate. The wine is, frankly, almost too good at the price. All the intensive artisanal work that Le Macchiole carries out in its vineyards and cellars benefits this wine, and despite more availability than its Paleo Rosso, Messorio and Scrio siblings, it sells out nearly as quickly.

Paleo Rosso

Toscana IGT

Paleo Rosso has been called Italy's landmark expression of Cabernet Franc. This grape variety is growing internationally as a distinct bottling, but Bolgheri has proven to be the single best place in the world to do so. The Mediterranean climate and surroundings result in a wine of extraordinarily expressive, sensual, and textural fruits and savory spices.

Messorio

Toscana IGT

Messorio, a Merlot monovarietal, is the winery’s crown jewel. Its initial vintage was 1994, and since then it has received extraordinary acclaim, including a 100-point score from the Wine Spectator for the 2004 vintage. The name Messorio refers to the ancient Tuscan practice of wheat harvesting, the most important time of the year in the Bolgheri countryside - once it referred to wheat; these days, it is all about grape harvesting.
