VINEYARD

The natural fertility of the soil is mitigated by high-density plantings and weak rootstock, leading to a natural production of only 800-1000 grams of grapes per plant. All phases of work in the vineyard, from the pruning to harvest, are carried out by hand – a great deal of work, as each hectare of vineyard requires 850 hours of work every year.

VINTAGE

The year began with a rainy winter that saw higher than average temperatures, which brought about a slow start to pruning. Temperatures rose slightly in spring, causing rapid budding of both Chardonnay and Merlot, which in turn exposed those two varieties to a higher risk of frost damage at the beginning of April, when temperatures dropped to near freezing overnight for two consecutive nights. Thankfully, there was no evident damage as a result. Thanks to the water reserves accumulated during the winter rains, the rising temperatures during the second half of April bro

Wine Spectator - October 15, 2024 "This vibrant, elegant, supple red exudes blackberry, black cherry and boysenberry fruit, with violet, graphite and black pepper accents. Driven by vivid acidity and punctuated with velvety tannins, this is a great example of the vintage in lockstep with style."

Wine Advocate - February 15, 2024 "The Le Macchiole 2021 Scrio (made with 100% Syrah) is a wine of generosity, depth and texture. It offers a full embrace of the senses with mulberry, damson plum, soft spice and camphor ash. You get a distant overlay of the peppercorn and smoked bacon that usually characterizes this variety; however, softer tones of cardamom or candied orange in dark chocolate take center stage. There's even a spot of blue flower or lilac. Some 10% of the wine ages in clay amphorae. I love the precision and determined length of this Syrah and the tannins that remain supple and velvety. This is an exceptional Tuscan Syrah."

Vinous - December 10, 2024 "The 2021 Scrio, Le Macchiole’s Syrah, opens with crushed flowers, bright, red-toned fruit and a kick of white pepper. Vibrant acids lift the mid-palate beautifully. This is an especially elegant, refined Scrio that very much reflects a shift to hillside vineyards that now account for 50% of the blend. At times, the red fruit profile and medium-bodied structure are Pinot-like. There’s a feeling of delicacy, of understatement, that is palpable. Scrio is such an unusual Syrah. I am so intrigued to see how it ages."

Wine Enthusiast - December 1, 2024 "Perfumed, spicy, earthy aromas of top soil, sweet tobacco, dark chocolate, candied orange peel, Luxardo cherry and rose petals create a nose that's simultaneously sophisticated and adventurous. The palate balances a berry richness with the crisper sweetness of salted chocolate chip cookies, before a new tension emerges on the finish, poised between peppery heat and fresh salinity."

Paleo Bianco

Bolgheri

First produced in 1991, Paleo Bianco is a silky, mineral-driven blend of Chardonnay (90%) and Sauvignon Blanc (10%). Perfect for pairing with seafood, this white is well suited to a medium to long aging in bottle.

Bolgheri Rosso

Bolgheri

Bolgheri Rosso is a refined, irresistible blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah, serving as an introduction to the estate. The wine is, frankly, almost too good at the price. All the intensive artisanal work that Le Macchiole carries out in its vineyards and cellars benefits this wine, and despite more availability than its Paleo Rosso, Messorio and Scrio siblings, it sells out nearly as quickly.

Paleo Rosso

Toscana IGT

Paleo Rosso has been called Italy's landmark expression of Cabernet Franc. This grape variety is growing internationally as a distinct bottling, but Bolgheri has proven to be the single best place in the world to do so. The Mediterranean climate and surroundings result in a wine of extraordinarily expressive, sensual, and textural fruits and savory spices.

Messorio

Toscana IGT

Messorio, a Merlot monovarietal, is the winery’s crown jewel. Its initial vintage was 1994, and since then it has received extraordinary acclaim, including a 100-point score from the Wine Spectator for the 2004 vintage. The name Messorio refers to the ancient Tuscan practice of wheat harvesting, the most important time of the year in the Bolgheri countryside - once it referred to wheat; these days, it is all about grape harvesting.
