Tommasi
Ripasso Valpolicella 2022
Valpolicella Classico Superiore
Tommasi was the first family to put Ripasso on their label, unafraid to shy away from this “peasant tradition.” The wine is made by refermenting fresh Valpolicella wine on the warm Amarone grape skins, which gives the wine greater richness and depth. Sourced from top vineyards Conca d’Oro and Tenuta Prunea, it blends Corvina, Rondinella, and Corvinone into a vibrant, spicy red with notes of black pepper, raisin, and sweet red cherry, balanced by lively acidity. Tommasi’s dedication to tradition and quality makes this a standout expression of classic Valpolicella.
VINEYARD
Grapes for this wine are selected from the Conca d'Oro and Tenuta Prunea vineyards in the rolling hills of the Valpolicella Classica. The soils are rich in active limestone, a defining characteristic that the estate considers among the most important factors in producing wines of finesse and elegance.
WINEMAKING
The selected grapes are placed onto traditional Arele and then left to rest for minimum 110 days in a large dedicated open room, where a ventilation system mantains an elevated and constant air flow. Fermentation then takes place in stainless steel vats or around 15 days. Re-fermentation follows on the pomace of the Amarone for 12-13 days. The wine ages for at least 18 months in 65 hL Slavonian oak casks 6 months’ bottle-aging.
VINTAGE
The 2022 Veneto growing season had a mild, dry winter and a hot, dry summer, leading to an early harvest and wines with concentrated flavors. The summer drought reduced vegetative growth and resulted in dehydrated berries, but also a disease-free vintage. The harvest began early, with some regions finishing by the end of September. The wines show intense, ripe fruit, and good acidity. Early ripening white grapes were harvested in mid-August, followed by reds in September.
TASTING NOTE
A deep, bright ruby red in color, it is rich and intensely spicy on the nose, with notes of cherry jam, tobacco and black pepper. On the palate it is full-bodied yet elegant, with gentle, silky tannins and a very long finish.
