Ferrer Bobet Priorat is the second vintage of a Priorat produced primarily from Ferrer Bobet’s own vineyards. It fulfills the vision of elegance, freshness and detail that were the reasons for starting the estate. It is a Carignan based blend, based on low vigor and high quality rootstocks and clones, aiming for perfectly balanced vines.

VINEYARD

The vineyards are managed in a way fundamental to the philosophy of Ferrer Bobet: the development of a strict organic viticulture which completely excludes the use of insecticides, fungicides and herbicides. The grapes are sourced from estate vineyards which were planted in 2004, 2005 and 2006 on licorella slate terraces and hillsides. Grapes are picked by hand into small 10kg bins, and selected berry by berry on a double sorting table before being transferred to tanks by gravity.

WINEMAKING

The winemaking is based on the principle that fastidious viticulture is the basis for the quality of the wine. Fermentation takes place in 15 and 30 Hl wooden, stainless steel and cement vats. Malolactic fermentation and ageing occurs in fine-grained, lightly toasted French oak barrels, 60% new, for 9 months. Bottling is unfined and unfiltered.

Reviews

James Suckling - April 9, 2019 "More developed than this producer's other wines and slightly dusty, too. But, like them, it's lively on the palate. A good balance of berry fruit, discreet, smoky oak and healthy, dry tannins, none of which is overdone."

"Elegance and freshness"

Wine Advocate - August 30, 2019 "The eponymous red blend 2015 Ferrer-Bobet looks for elegance and freshness as a way to express the character of the terroir. It's a blend of 55% Cariñena, 25% Garnacha, 15% Syrah and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon matured in French barriques for 12 months. The nose has tons of aromatic herbs, thyme and rosemary and even mint, coming through as aromatic and balsamic. It has a little more body than the 2016, but it's equally balanced, in a more powerful vintage. I like it as much as the 2016, even a tad more. 23,727 bottles and 500 magnums were filled in February 2017."

"Beautiful balanced, elegant, seamless wine"

Jeb Dunnuck - March 27, 2020 "Starting with the 2015 Ferrer Bobet, this blend of 50% Carignan, 25% Grenache, 16% Syrah, and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon sports a deep purple color as well as Rhône-like bouquet of smoked black fruits, ground herbs, leather, dried earth, and licorice. It’s rich, with a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, good acidity, and light tannins, all making for a beautiful balanced, elegant, seamless wine to enjoy over the coming decade."

"Delivers harmony and depth"

Wine Spectator - May 11, 2020 "This red is gentle, with a lively structure and balanced flavors of cherry, mountain herb, licorice and mineral. This delivers harmony and depth."

"Concentrated and precise"

Vinous - March 19, 2021 "Full ruby. Powerful blueberry, cherry, violet pastille and cola aromas are complemented by subtle mineral and allspice overtones. Concentrated and precise on the palate, offering bitter cherry and dark berry flavors that take on a spicy element with aeration. Shows fine clarity and solid thrust on a long, floral-inflected finish framed by slow-building tannins."

Vinyes Velles

Ferrer Bobet's Vinyes Velles is an old vine blend of Carignane (70%) and Grenache (30%). It's produced from some of the best steep slate hillside and terraced vineyards in Priorat. Though the "second wine" of Ferrer Bobet, the initial 2005 release put Ferrer Bobet on the wine world map. Two of the most important publications in Spain named it their wine of the year, and accolades came pouring in from Russia, the UK and the US. It launched the Ferrer Bobet mission of creating wines of elegance and purity, and the message has resonated.
