Ornellaia is the estate’s flagship wine—a Grand Vin that embodies the power, elegance, and Mediterranean soul of Bolgheri. First produced in 1985, it is crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, harvested by hand and aged for 18 months in French oak. Blended after the first year, it returns to barrel for further refinement. With its remarkable balance and depth, Ornellaia captures the unique identity of each vintage and has the structure to evolve beautifully for decades.

The 2023 Bolgheri growing season began with mild winter weather and early budbreak, followed by spring rains and a hot, dry July. Frequent rains during flowering and fruit set caused lower yields, but grapes matured with perfect balance, achieving good phenolic maturity and moderate sugar levels. Though high humidity required extra effort to prevent mildew, the summer's cooler conditions and timely rains in August allowed for ideal ripening, resulting in healthy, well-formed clusters and a generally successful harvest.

Wine Advocate - February 5, 2026 "The Ornellaia 2023 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot, and it is worth noting that Merlot remains present at nearly the same percentage as previous years, despite the greater challenges faced by early-ripening varieties in this mildew-prone vintage. Careful fruit selection made the difference. The wine shows impressive richness and concentration with a bouquet that leans botanical and complex, marked by dark fruit, Mediterranean thyme and rosemary. The nose was slightly closed when I tasted the wine, but it will open. The texture is velvety and polished, delivering beautiful richness with a sense of succulence that feels expansive on the palate. According to proprietor Lamberto Frescobaldi, the goal is to establish a clear through line focused on freshness and balancing fruit and spice while avoiding excess ripeness. This is a meticulously made Ornellaia that captures the vintage with remarkable elegance."

In certain vintages conditions are perfect in the tiny “Palmetta” vineyard for the production of this exclusive dessert wine. The name Ornus dell’Ornellaia takes its inspiration from ‘Fraxinus Ornus’, the Latin name for the Manna or Flowering Ash (in Italian, Orniello), the tree which has given its name to the Ornellaia. The “Manna Ash” Orniello or ‘Fraxinus Ornus’ is a tree which is typical to the Mediterranean coastal area. Its precious sap has been used since Biblical times as a sweetener and acts as a perfect link to the sweetness of Ornus dell’Ornellaia.
