Ornellaia
Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia 2023
Bolgheri
Coming primarily from the Ornellaia’s younger vineyard sites and made with the same passion and attention to detail as the estate’s flagship wine, Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia combines generosity and depth of flavor with an engaging and vibrant personality. Made to be more approachable, yet delivering the quality experience of Ornellaia, Merlot has a dominant role in this wine in contrast to the Cabernet Sauvignon in Ornellaia.
VINEYARD
The Ornellaia vineyard totals 280 acres that are divided into more than 70 vineyard plots according to soil type, exposition and varietal. There are three major soil types: marine (sedimentary deposit from the sea), alluvial (marly, sandy clays with mineral veins), and volcanic (schist, gravel and porous soils). All the vineyards are about 3 miles from the Mediterranean shore. The mild maritime climate features sea breezes that keep the sky clear, low rainfall, and long summers that favor the development of aromatic compounds. Vineyards are planted at high density, from 5,000-8,700 hl/ha, and feature several training systems - spur-pruned cordon, single Guyot, and head-pruned vines.
WINEMAKING
Hand-harvested and selected on a double sorting table, before and after de-stemming, and finally gently crushed. Each variety and each parcel is vinified separately. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel for two weeks, followed by maceration of around 10-15 days. Malolactic fermentation in stainless steel, and completed after transfer to barrels (25% new and 75% a year old). The wine remains in Ornellaia’s temperature-controlled cellar for a further 15 months.
VINTAGE
The 2023 Bolgheri growing season began with mild winter weather and early budbreak, followed by spring rains and a hot, dry July. Frequent rains during flowering and fruit set caused lower yields, but grapes matured with perfect balance, achieving good phenolic maturity and moderate sugar levels. Though high humidity required extra effort to prevent mildew, the summer's cooler conditions and timely rains in August allowed for ideal ripening, resulting in healthy, well-formed clusters and a generally successful harvest.

Reviews

Wine Advocate - February 5, 2026 "A blend of 44% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot, the Ornellaia 2023 Bolgheri Rosso Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia shows a nicely concentrated appearance and balanced aromas from what was ultimately a very strong vintage. The 2023 growing season saw pressure from downy mildew, but steady coastal winds helped keep the fruit healthy. A dry August followed by a rain-free September allowed for even ripening on the estate’s reddish sand and clay soils. Harvest was carefully timed to avoid the risk of over-ripeness, resulting in a wine with rich fruit, a velvety texture and impressive concentration. (The overripe fruit appears in the entry-level Le Volte dell'Ornellaia instead.) The tannins are refined and seamlessly integrated with no hard edges, while freshness on the finish balances the weight of fruit."

James Suckling - July 23, 2025 "A gentle and elegant wine with aromas of spices, milk chocolate, vanilla, milk, mint, graphite and dark fruit. Silky and velvety on the palate, with ripe tannins, crisp acidity, a full body, clove flavors and amazing complexity."

Vinous - June 26, 2025 "The 2023 Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia is a delight. Crushed flowers, ripe red cherry fruit, spice, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco are all nicely laced together. This mid-weight Serre Nuove is notable for its forward fruit, mid-weight structure and overall appeal. Floral top notes extend the effortless, silky finish."

Wine Spectator - October 31, 2025 "This red is juicy, with finesse to its black currant, black cherry, violet and spice flavors. Firmly structured, offering ample acidity and tannins. Fine length."
