Gorgona
Gorgona 2024
Costa Toscana IGT
This wine, a blend of Vermentino and Ansonica, grows from a vineyard planted in a small amphitheater overlooking the sea, protected from the various winds that buffet the island. The Frescobaldi family’s oenologists and viticulturists have worked with the inmates on the penal colony since 2012 to tend the vines and make the wines, teaching them a valuable trade to ease their reintegration to society.
VINEYARD
This wine grows from a small, organically-managed vineyard planted in an amphitheater overlooking the sea on this tiny island off the Tuscan coast. The oldest sections were planted in 1999, and the vineyard was expanded in 2015, now covering two hectares.
WINEMAKING
80% Ansonica and 20% Vermentino, Gorgona is aged in a combination of stainless steel and oak barrels for 7 months, followed by several months in bottle.
VINTAGE
The 2024 Tuscan growing season was largely favorable, starting with a mild winter and spring, followed by a hot, dry summer. Heavy rains in May and June replenished water reserves, helping vines endure the summer heat. August rains arrived at the right time, balancing sugars and acidity for optimal ripening. The harvest was demanding but rewarding, with good yields and excellent grape quality. This vintage marks a recovery from the lighter 2023 vintage.
TASTING NOTE
The Gorgona white has an elegantly intense Mediterranean character in its aromas and flavors, with sea breeze, rosemary and chamomile accents. The fruit trends exotic and yellow-fleshed, with delicate notes of citrus.
