Domaine Roy & Fils
Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2023
Russian River Valley
The calling card of Domaine Roy & Fils, the Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is the only Pinot from the winery that comes from both estate vineyards–Iron Filbert in Dundee Hills and Quartz Acron in Yamhill-Carlton. The wine sees 15 days of maceration on the skins followed by 10 months of lees aging in barriques, of which only 10% are new oak. The wine expresses the signature style of Domaine Roy & Fils, favoring elegance over power:
VINEYARD
The Hallberg Vineyard, located in the Green Valley AVA, benefits from a cool, marine-influenced climate with daytime breezes and moderate nighttime temperatures. The Goldridge series sand loam soils offer excellent drainage and low fertility, keeping vines low in vigor. High-density vine spacing (1x2m) promotes balance and concentration, while dry farming ensures natural vine equilibrium, resulting in a wine that expresses the unique terroir with purity and focus.
WINEMAKING
Partially destemmed and cold soaked for 4-7 days before fermentation. The cap is gently punched down 2-3 times per day during fermentation, and the wine macerates for 7-10 days in tank after fermentation. The wine is then pressed into French oak barrels (40% new) for 15 months of aging on primary lees.
VINTAGE
The 2022 winter was cold and dry, and spring followed was warm and sunny with the exception of a frost episode and a hailstorm in April.
TASTING NOTE
Cool-climate Pinot aromatics of mulberry, bay laurel, fennel, and cedar open into a vibrant core of compote, cassis and hibiscus. The finish is velvety, seductive, with earthy tamarind and Oolong tea. Has ample acidity to age for years.
