Castell d'Encus
Ekam 2019
Costers del Segre
As a cool climate Riesling, Ekam is a bracing yet completely approachable introduction to the Castell d’Encus lineup. Featuring a unique blend of riesling and albariño, the wine stuns with an array of fresh orchard fruits, set against the aforementioned brisk structure. Some exposure to noble rot creates additional intrigue on the palate.
Vineyard
All vineyards sit and average of 1000 meters above sea level, with perfect southerly exposures allowing optimum ripeness in the face of shorter growing seasons. The climate is continental, with a notable diurnal shift in temperature between night and day. The property consists of 95 HA, 25 of which are under vine. Soils are generally a mix of calcareous and clay-loam.
Winemaking
Fruit in handpicked in small, 10 kg cases from the estate blocks. The wine is subsequently fermented in 25hl and 50hl small tanks at low temperatures.
Vintage
A good year despite reduced yields, many growers in the area remarked on the consistent balance in the wines. Optimum harvest conditions allowed whites and reds to harvested with time pressure, ensuring even ripening of fruit and phenolics.
Tasting Note
Highly aromatic with white flowers and tropical fruit leaping out the gate, Ekam refreshes and invigorates with it’s racy texture and confident palate. Vibrantly pristine fruit on the palate show as granny smith apples, bosc pears and tangerine, with a fine, sea salt minerality finishing the experience.
