Trade Tools

Following Ornellaia’s philosophy, Ornellaia Bianco is the estate’s vision of a world-class white wine, crafted from three small, north-facing vineyards that showcase the terroir’s potential beyond reds. A blend of 90% Sauvignon and 10% Viognier, the wine glows sunshine gold in the glass. It opens with complex exotic fruit aromas and a strong mineral backbone. On the palate, it’s full-bodied and poised, driven by bright acidity and finishing with a mouthwatering freshness.

VINEYARD

The Ornellaia vineyard totals 280 acres that are divided into more than 70 vineyard plots according to soil type, exposition and varietal. There are three major soil types: marine (sedimentary deposit from the sea), alluvial (marly, sandy clays with mineral veins), and volcanic (schist, gravel and porous soils). All the vineyards are about 3 miles from the Mediterranean shore. The mild maritime climate features sea breezes that keep the sky clear, low rainfall, and long summers that favor the development of aromatic compounds.

WINEMAKING

Hand-harvested in 15 kg crates in the early hours of the morning and immediately cooled on arrival in the cellar to keep aromatic potential intact. Following careful selection, whole grape clusters are subjected to slow and soft pressing with maximum attention to protection against oxidation. After static decantation, all the must was placed in barrels of various sizes, 25% new and 75% used, for alcoholic fermentation at temperatures no higher than 22°C. No malolactic fermentation is carried out.

VINTAGE

The 2023 Bolgheri growing season began with mild winter weather and early budbreak, followed by spring rains and a hot, dry July. Frequent rains during flowering and fruit set caused lower yields, but grapes matured with perfect balance, achieving good phenolic maturity and moderate sugar levels. Though high humidity required extra effort to prevent mildew, the summer's cooler conditions and timely rains in August allowed for ideal ripening, resulting in healthy, well-formed clusters and a generally successful harvest.

James Suckling - June 16, 2026 "A supercomplex wine in a white-Bordeaux style with cedar, firecrackers, lemon tree, white pepper and stony minerality. Medium- to full-bodied, tight-knit and deep, offering silky texture, refreshing acidity, a savory palate and an endless, toasty yet integrated finish."

Wine Advocate - February 5, 2026 "Made with Sauvignon Blanc, the 2023 Bolgheri Bianco Ornellaia shows a softer more cushiony profile than recent editions. The Sauvignon Blanc is sourced primarily from the Bellaria vineyard at 130 meters in elevation. Parcel selection played a key role in 2023, with Poggio alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia showing more exotic fruit, and the estate choose to emphasize a distinctly Mediterranean expression with riper yellow fruit tones for this wine. Fermentation is carried out with great precision with strict protection from oxygen, followed by time in barrique, with about 30% new French oak, tonneaux and amphorae. The wine ages for 10 months on the fine lees with daily bâtonnage at first, then gradually reduced. This vintage outperforms the 2022 in terms of length and polish, offering notes of white pepper, ginger, lemon peel, exotic flower and spice."

Vinous - February 1, 2025 "The 2023 Ornellaia Bianco, 100% Sauvignon Blanc, is soft, open-knit and ready to go. Scents of orchard fruit, sage, white flowers, mint and white pepper open with some coaxing. In 2023, the Bianco is quite soft and generous in feel. Exotic tropical notes run through the textured, creamy finish."
