Marina Cvetić

Abruzzo

In 1987, Gianni Masciarelli, the visionary who put Abruzzo on the world wine map, met a young woman from Serbia named Marina Cvetić. Their meeting sparked both a marriage and a partnership that would carry the estate to an entirely new level of ambition. A few years later, in 1991, Gianni surprised his wife with a wine bearing her name: a Montepulciano d’Abruzzo built from his finest sites, made with the kind of obsessive care he reserved for his most personal projects. Marina’s own reaction, as family lore has it, was that no one outside Italy would ever manage to pronounce it. Decades later, it’s become one of the most recognized and respected names to come out of Abruzzo.

Today Marina Cvetić leads Masciarelli alongside her daughter, Miriam Lee Masciarelli, continuing the work she and Gianni began together after his untimely passing in 2008. Within the estate’s broader portfolio, which spans everyday Classic Line bottlings up through the iconic, decades-defining Villa Gemma, the Marina Cvetić line occupies its own distinct register. Where Villa Gemma is the estate’s historic flagship, the wine that first proved Abruzzo could stand among Italy’s greats, Marina Cvetić is its more intimate, more exacting counterpart: smaller-production wines drawn from a curated cross-section of parcels selected specifically to explore texture, structure, and the interplay of altitude and soil across the region.

The fruit is drawn from estate-owned vineyards spread across all four provinces of Abruzzo, Chieti, Pescara, Teramo, and L’Aquila, a range of terroir no other Abruzzese producer can claim, stretching from Adriatic-facing lowlands to cooler sites nearly 2,400 feet up in the Apennine foothills. This diversity of altitude, exposure, and soil (largely calcareous clay and limestone) gives the Marina Cvetić wines a layered complexity and sense of place that’s difficult to replicate. Farming leans on both traditional Abruzzese pergola training and the Guyot and spurred-cordon systems Gianni pioneered in the region, while winemaking favors extended aging in French barriques, a technique virtually unheard of for Montepulciano and Trebbiano before Gianni introduced it.

Stylistically, the line is defined by structure, ripeness, and real character. The Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva is dense and dark-fruited, with a silky, polished texture built to age. The Trebbiano d’Abruzzo Riserva reveals just how far this once-overlooked white grape can go, showing full body and layered aromatics rarely associated with the variety. And ISKRA, Serbian for “spark,” was created by Gianni as a personal tribute to Marina: a single-vineyard cru from a warm, high-elevation site in the Colline Teramane, offering the most concentrated and structured expression in the range.

Marina Cvetic Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

Gianni Masciarelli one day suprised his wife by presenting her with this wine, from the grape he made famous from the region, named after her. Croatian in origin, her first reaction was that no one would be able to pronounce the wine. Because of the outstanding sites used to produce the wine and the serious winemaking care it undergoes, Marina Cvetic Montepulciano d'Abruzzo soon became the most widespread example of serious Montepluciano in the world.

Marina Cvetic Trebbiano d’Abruzzo Riserva

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

The Trebbiano Riserva Marina Cvetic represents the ultimate expression for the estate of one of the historical vines of Abruzzo.  Like Montepulciano, Trebbiano was once thought to be a workhorse grape without the potential to produce great wine. The interpretation of this wine is original and has a character. Marina Cvetic wines have full body and are elegant and are a “lone voice” for the most demanding and technical experts.

ISKRA is a true outlier, representing a single vineyard handled in a particular way to create a wine of extraordinary distinction and depth.

Marina Cvetić Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva 2017 (94 WA)

    -

"The Marina Cvetić 2017 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva S. Martino Rosso is a full and generous wine that nails both the traits of the hot vintage and this super soft and velvety grape variety squarely on the head. You get a lot of pretty intensity here with black cherry fruit, blackberry, sweet spice and tobacco. The wine is richly textured and full-bodied, or perfect with an epic T-bone steak on the grill with a side of fried potatoes to soak up the meat juice on your plate."

"The 2020 Trebbiano d'Abruzzo Riserva Marina Cvetić is glossy and thick with honey, Golden Delicious apple and quince. You will also find softly delivered tones of toasted nut and spice. The wine runs smoothly over the palate thanks to its rich, creamy texture."- M.L 7/23

Marina Cvetić

Marina Cvetić is a Serbian-born vintner who has spent decades helping shape Abruzzo into one of Italy's most respected wine regions. She met Gianni Masciarelli in 1987, and their partnership, both personal and professional, pushed the estate toward international recognition; in 1991, Gianni named a wine after her, which later grew into its own acclaimed line. After Gianni's untimely passing in 2008, Marina took over leadership of Masciarelli, and continues to guide the estate's direction and quality standards today. She now runs the winery alongside her daughter, Miriam Lee Masciarelli.

Miriam Lee Masciarelli

Miriam Lee Masciarelli is Gianni and Marina's eldest daughter, and today leads Masciarelli alongside her mother. Having grown up within the estate, she has taken on the work of carrying its legacy forward, expanding both its production and its reach in international markets. Under her and Marina's shared leadership, the estate has grown its Food Project (olive oil, grappa, and other products), established Castello di Semivicoli as a wine-tourism destination, and broadened distribution through Gianni's Selection. She serves as one of the winery's leading ambassadors, regularly representing Masciarelli and the Marina Cvetić line at tastings and events abroad.
