How to Safely Visit California’s Bucolic Wine Country This Fall

Leading luxury publication Departures Magazine highlights Calistoga Ranch’s partnership with Chateau Montelena in an effort to safely bring the traditional winery experience to hotel guests. The piece includes an interview with Winemaker Matt Crafton and elaborates on the unique, luxury packages that lucky guests can book.

Crafton explains that, “We’re currently offering three distinct tasting experiences, one of which is hosted by myself, or Bo.” The tastings include an in-depth flight of wines spanning five decades, special access to large format bottles, and very limited bottlings. Two of the options also incorporate a private dinner prepared by Calistoga Ranch’s Chef Chris Ludwick, paired with Montelena wines from the tasting. “These are really on another level,” adds Crafton.

In 1976 Chateau Montelena put California at the forefront of the wine world. That year a who's-who of the French wine establishment gathered in Paris for a blind tasting of French and American wines. When the scores were tallied, the top-ranking white wine was Chateau Montelena's 1973 Chardonnay. Montelena today continues to be a quality benchmark in Napa Valley, producing some of the finest Cabernet and Chardonnay in California.
