Domaine Talmard

Mâcon-Chardonnay 2024

Macon

It is rare to find domaine-bottled wines in this part of the region, as the production is dominated by coops.
Talmard exercises complete control over all facets of viticulture, winemaking, and bottling at the estate, reducing yields, harvesting early to preserve freshness, and bottling the wine with his own state-of-the-art bottling line. The result is one of the very finest examples of the fresh, appealing style of Chardonnay grown in rolling limestone hills of the Mâconnais.

VINEYARD

The 49 acres of vineyards lie predominantly within the commune of Chardonnay – thought to be the geographical origin of the variety, and thus entitled to use the AOC “Mâcon-Chardonnay.”

WINEMAKING

The estate is dedicated to the production of a single wine. Grapes are picked fairly early to maintain good acidity and are whole-cluster pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts under temperature control entirely in stainless steel. The wine is lastly aged for 6-8 months sur-lie.

VINTAGE

The 2024 Burgundy vintage faced one of the most challenging growing seasons in decades, marked by frost, hail, excessive rain, and severe mildew pressure. Spring frost hit Chablis, while summer storms caused further damage. Persistent humidity heightened disease pressure, requiring extensive vineyard management. Yields are significantly reduced, with some estimates down 25%. Harvest began in mid-September, aligning with 2019 and 2021. Despite the hardships, well-managed vineyards produced quality wines marked by tension and poise.
