Giacosa Fratelli
Gavi 2022
Giacosa Fratelli’s Gavi is a traditional Piemontese white made from the classic Cortese grape. Next to Fratelli’s other white wine, Roero Arneis, which is rounder and characterized by ripe orchard fruit and honeysuckle, Gavi is all about freshness and minerality. It has a harmonious nose of yellow apples, chamomile, and lemon zest. The palate has a touch of nuttiness and finishes elegantly with bright acidity.
Vineyard
The Gavi territory is in the province of Alessandria, in the southwest part of Piedmont, on the border with Liguria. The Gavi territory is mainly hilly, with uplands rich in red soil as a result of the clayish marl of that area. Vines are 13-43 years old and are grown at 656-884 feet above sea level.
Winemaking
The organically-grown grapes are destemmed, pressed, and fermented in stainless steel without malolactic fermentation. It ages for just 2-3 months in stainless steel.
Vintage
The 2022 vintage in Piedmont was challenging after an extremely dry winter. Thankfully, summer rains provided relief, though yields were down in most places by 10-20%.
