Vigna del Mandorlo is Giacosa Fratelli’s top Barolo cru, located on the Scarrone hillside in Castiglione Falletto. This was bottled as a “riserva,” indicating that the wine has been aged for at least 62 months, with a least 18 in wooden barrels. For a traditional producer like Fratelli, bottle age is extremely important. It is well-structured and persistent on the palate, with expressive notes of rose, licorice, tobacco and white truffle.

Vineyard

Vigna del Mandorlo is a south-facing vineyard in Castiglione Falletto at about 1,200 feet. It’s mostly clay, with speks of marine sediment and sandstone. The vines are about 40 years old.

Winemaking

The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully placed in large cases. They are left to rest for a night before undergoing crushing and de-stemming the next morning. Maceration lasts for 55 days. The wine ages for three years in 30 hL wooden casks.

Vintage

Simply put, 2013 was a spectacular vintage. The wines are structures, aromatic, fruit-driven and built to age.

Tasting Note

This Barolo is well-structured and persistent on the palate, with expressive notes of rose, licorice, tobacco and white truffle. With over a decade of aging, it is showing beautiful tertiary notes.
