Frog's Leap Winery
Zinfandel 2022
Rutherford
Frog’s Leap Zinfandel is crafted from dry-farmed, organically grown vineyards in Napa Valley, primarily from the historic Rossi and Truchard sites. These vineyards, rooted in gravelly loam soils, produce balanced fruit with moderate sugar levels and vibrant acidity. The wine blends Zinfandel with small amounts of Petite Sirah and Carignan to enhance structure and complexity. Fermentation occurs with native yeasts in small stainless steel tanks, followed by aging in primarily neutral French oak barrels for 12–14 months. The result is a refined, food-friendly Zinfandel offering bright red fruit, spice, and earthy undertones, with a lively finish and restrained alcohol.
VINEYARD
Frog’s Leap Zinfandel is sourced from dry-farmed, organic vineyards in St. Helena and Rutherford, primarily planted on gravelly alluvial soils ideal for the variety. These valley floor sites with gentle slopes and moderate elevation provide excellent drainage and deep root penetration, promoting balanced ripening and concentrated, site-driven fruit.
WINEMAKING
Frog’s Leap Zinfandel is harvested early to preserve freshness. Petite Sirah is picked slightly earlier, cold-soaked, and co-fermented with Zinfandel to moderate fermentation heat and add structure. Native yeast fermentation allows for gentle extraction and nuanced complexity.
VINTAGE
The 2022 growing season in Rutherford, Napa Valley, was characterized by a mild start with an early budbreak in March. The summer months delivered warm days and cool nights, creating ideal conditions for flavor development and acidity.
TASTING NOTE
Intense red-black fruit aromas, with a touch of warmth due to the dry year. Rich, dense, and more tannic than usual, making it a meaty Zin.
