Ferren Wines
Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2016
Sonoma Coast
Ferren’s Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is a barrel select blend of all all the single vineyard Chardonnays. No less astounding in texture, depth or acidity, it is simply barrels that offer more in their youth and the tiniest touch less oak.
Vineyard

Lancel Creek Vineyard is perched above the tiny hamlet of Occidental on the remote Sonoma Coast. This secluded, two-acre site was prepared and planted by Ulises Valdez. The pale, off-white Goldridge soil provides just enough nutrients and moisture for these densely planted vines to ripen a small amount of intensely aromatic and flavorful Chardonnay. The vineyard faces the Pacific Ocean, a mere five miles to the west. The combined influence of the cold Pacific and the warming afternoon sun produces a wine of incredible richness and sublime balance.
Winemaking

Chardonnays at Ferren are cold-pressed, then barrel-fermeneted with native yeasts in French oak barriques. They are aged 1 year in 25% new French oak, then an blended and aged an additional 6 months in stainless steel barrels until bottling.

"Packs some oomph yet stays beautifully balanced. Buy it"
Jeb Dunnuck - October 3, 2019 "Made by the talented Matt Courtney, the 2016 Chardonnay Sonoma Coast comes from a handful of sites on the Sonoma Coast and spent 12 months in 20% new barrels before being moved to stainless steel tanks for six months. It’s a riper, rounded Sonoma Coast Chardonnay that has plenty of white peach, currant, and spice notes as well as subtle oak, full body, ample mid-palate concentration, and a great finish. It's a powerful wine that packs some oomph yet stays beautifully balanced. Buy it."
"Loads of floral and honey-nut nuance, juicy acidity and phenolic texture"
Wine Advocate (93+) - October 3, 2019 "The 2016 Chardonnay Sonoma Coast is made from declassified barrels of the single-vineyard wines. It has an open nose of lemongrass, stone, white blossoms, spring honey and hazelnut. Medium to full-bodied, it has great concentration in the mouth with loads of floral and honey-nut nuance, juicy acidity and phenolic texture to add support to all those layers, finishing very long and honeyed. 90 cases were made."
"Rich and finely textured finish"
Vinous - October 3, 2019 "A plump and spicy style, with unctuous pear tart, Fuji apple and red peach flavors that are backed by juicy acidity. Pastry notes linger on the rich and finely textured finish."
"Rich, creamy and super-expressive"
Vinous - October 3, 2019 "The 2016 Chardonnay (Sonoma Coast) is rich, creamy and super-expressive. A blend of deselected barrels from the three single-vineyard sources, the Sonoma Coast Chardonnay punches above its weight. There is plenty of the texture and richness that informs the vineyard designates. Tangerine, dried flowers and lightly honeyed notes all build in this striking, absolutely delicious wine from Ferren and proprietor Matt Courtney."
