Château Recougne
Château Recougne 2022
Bordeaux Superieur
Legend has it that the name Recougne came in “recognition” of the quality of its wines by King Henri IV in the early 17th century, and while wine has been made on the site for 400 years, the estate is perhaps more relevant today than ever. As Bordeaux recalibrates towards producing wines of freshness and balance, Recougne stands as an example of a pure, fresh style that has remained steadfast for over half a century. The wines have concentration and energy, with pure red and black fruits and a complex earthiness. Amazingly, examples of Recougne from the 1950s and 1960s are still drinking gorgeously.
Today the wines are made by one of the young stars of the right bank, the fourth generation of his family to make wine at Recougne, Marc Milhade. Marc’s philosophy and energy are guided towards more work in the vineyard, and less intervention (in this case, continuing less intervention) in the cellar.
VINEYARD
The Château Recougne vineyard is situated on Bordeaux’s right bank in the centre of the golden triangle of the Fronsadais region. The vines, which are on average over 30 years old, cover an estate of more than 100 hectares which is one of the largest in the appellation of Bordeaux Supérieur. The vineyard is situated on south facing slopes with clay/silicium soil on a ferrous substrate. The terroir is a clay mosaic and possesses all the attributes to produce grapes of remarkable quality.
WINEMAKING
Traditional vinification combining thermo regulated stainless steel tanks and small concrete vats, adapted to the plots of vines to be vinified there Gentle extraction while respecting the fruit selective sorting of the harvest, short and regular pumping over, malolactic fermentation
VINTAGE
This typical classic blend Bordeaux Superieur is always appreciated for his consistency throughout the year. Château Recougne 2022 vintage is exceptional and reveals beautiful red currant, black cherry and plum fruit aromas giving way to notes of spice and moccha. The structure is well balanced with a lot of freshness on the attack and a long finish with fine tannins of roasted coffee. This wine goes perfectly with both red and white meat, grilled, roasted or sauteed, even slightly spicy. It can also be paired with many kind of cheese. We recommend storing and serving

Reviews

James Suckling - January 23, 2025 "Ripe dark berries, ground cloves and licorice on the nose, with a subtle stony character. Tight and chewy, with a medium body, firm tannins and a bitter, spiced, walnuty finish."
