Montesodi is the ultimate single-vineyard expression of Sangiovese at the Nipozzano estate. The vineyard has always been known as Montesodi due to the stony nature of the soil. It was the estate’s first cru wine, created in 1974, and is not only an extremely elegant and lively Sangiovese, but has the power to age for decades. Situated at 400 meters above sea level, with schist soils and a south-west exposure, the vineyard benefits from significant temperature shifts, contributing to the wine’s complexity and remarkable longevity. As one of the first 100% Sangiovese wines in the region, Montesodi represents the epitome of Chianti Rùfina.

VINEYARD

The Nipozzano estate spans over 1,500 acres of mountainous forest, olive groves, an olive mill, cattle-grazing land, vineyards, a winery, and the historic Castello . It is an incredible ecosystem, producing not only outstanding wines, but also some of the finest olive oil in Italy (the Laudemio Frescobaldi). The vineyards roll up and down the hillsides surrounding the castle at an elevation range between 250 and 400 meters, with exposures from southeast to southwest. The Montesodi vineyard is located 400 metres above sea level, planted in schist soils with a magnificent south-west exposure

WINEMAKING

After being tended on the vine, the Sangiovese grapes from the Montesodi vineyard were harvested by hand into 15 kg crates. Further care and selection was taken in the cellar; on arrival, the grapes were carefully checked on a sorting table. The grapes were selected one by one to ensure only the highest quality in terms of polyphenolic substances and grape health. After alcoholic fermentation and maceration, malolactic fermentation took place after racking.

VINTAGE

The 2022 Chianti vintage began with a cool, dry winter and warm, early spring, followed by a hot summer that prompted some irrigation. Late July and early August rains relieved the drought, ensuring the harvest aligned with average timings. The harvest started in mid-September with international varieties, followed by Sangiovese. Although drought reduced yields, the resulting fruit was concentrated, promising high-quality wines. Despite challenges, the vintage shows great potential for depth and structure.

Vinous - July 1, 2025 "The 2022 Chianti Rufina Riserva Vigna Montesodi offers an attractive mix of dark-toned fruit, mocha, new leather, cedar, incense, and espresso. This broad, layered Chianti Rufina Riserva is notable for its textural richness and overall intensity."

James Suckling - July 15, 2025 "Complex and layered, with aromas of sour cherries, pomegranates, dried lavender and an earthy edge. The medium-bodied palate is textured and bright, with fine-grained tannins, cool fruit and a long, fresh and fleshy finish."

Wine Spectator - October 31, 2025 "A tense, linear version, this red boasts cherry, strawberry, earth and iron flavors. Firms up nicely on the finish, where the aftertaste of fruit and mineral extends."

Wine Enthusiast - June 1, 2026 "The single-vineyard Montesodi shows itself with style and complexity. Bing cherry, fennel, and mushroom brodo expresses itself from the glass. Strong texture and jolts of acidity keep the wine in sync as you taste ripe plum, balsamic, and dried violet that work well together. The tannins are rich but surrender beautifully when you give it just a little time to open."
