Ammura

Etna Rosso 2023

Etna

Trade Tools

Ammura Etna Rosso shows bright ruby with garnet reflections. Aromas of wild berries, cherry, pomegranate, black pepper, and smoky volcanic stone lead to an elegant, harmonious palate with silky tannins and lively, persistent freshness. Crafted to preserve Etna’s signature mineral tension and the lifted aromatics of Nerello Mascalese, the wine emphasizes finesse over weight, making it exceptionally versatile at the table while still delivering the depth and character expected of high-elevation volcanic reds.

VINEYARD

Nerello Mascalese is grown on Mount Etna’s volcanic slopes, where altitude and mineral-rich lava soils support a long ripening season and naturally preserve freshness. The variety’s sensitivity to terroir makes site expression central to the wine’s identity, producing a refined structure and a medium-bodied frame with ethereal mineral tension. Ammura’s approach emphasizes vineyard conditions that translate into bright red fruit definition, savory complexity, and a distinctly volcanic finish rather than overt richness.

WINEMAKING

The grapes are destemmed and macerated in stainless steel, fermenting 12–15 days at 64–72°F with daily cap wetting. After fermentation, the wine is racked and the pomace gently pressed. Natural malolactic fermentation follows. The wine then ages 6 months in stainless steel and 12 months in 20-hectoliter oak barrels, developing structure, elegance, and refined complexity while preserving the bright red fruit and minerality that reflect Etna’s unique volcanic terroir.

VINTAGE

After an unusually wet spring on Etna, persistent rains drove severe downy mildew pressure and cut yields, especially on the north side. Summer turned warm and dry, bringing hydric stress, thicker skins and uneven ripening. Light September rain and an even, cooler October helped Carricante and Nerello Mascalese reach balanced ripeness, but only with strict sorting. The strongest 2023s are lifted and highly perfumed, with fine tannins, volcanic savor and bright red-fruited energy, with acidity sometimes a shade lower than cooler years.
