Villa Gemma
Abruzzo
Villa Gemma is Masciarelli’s flagship, the wine that first proved Abruzzo could stand among Italy’s great wine regions. Its story begins even before the estate itself: in 1930, Gianni Masciarelli’s grandfather made wine from a steep hillside vineyard called Colle Cave, in the Chieti hills. That same site remains the source of Villa Gemma Montepulciano d’Abruzzo today, giving the wine a connection to the family’s earliest winemaking roots. When Gianni founded Masciarelli in 1981, he built Villa Gemma as the fullest expression of his ambitions for the region, and in 2000, Villa Gemma Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 1995 was named “Best Wine in Italy” by Gambero Rosso, the first time a Montepulciano had ever received that distinction. It has gone on to earn 14 consecutive Tre Bicchieri awards, a run unmatched by any other Italian wine.
The wine’s identity is inseparable from Colle Cave itself. Unlike most of Abruzzo, where the traditional pergola system still dominates, Gianni trained these vines using French Guyot, a deliberate departure that reflected both the vineyard’s unique character and his broader belief that Abruzzo’s native grapes deserved the same rigor applied to the world’s finest wine regions. The soils here are a mix of limestone, clay, and gravel, and the resulting wine is aged first in large botti, then in new French barriques for 18 to 24 months, followed by another two to three years in bottle before release.
Villa Gemma Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is dense and layered, with ripe dark fruit, dried fruit, baking spice, and mineral undertones that unfold over years in bottle. Alongside it sit two wines built to balance that intensity: Villa Gemma Bianco, first released in 1985 and blended from Trebbiano, Pecorino, and Cococciola, offers bright citrus and stone fruit with freshness and depth; and Villa Gemma Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo, first produced in 1986 from 100% Montepulciano grown at San Martino sulla Marrucina, which is a structured, serious rosé from an appellation many consider the finest in Italy for the style. Together, the wines of Villa Gemma represent Masciarelli’s highest ambitions for its Abruzzese terroir.
Wines
Villa Gemma Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva
Montepulciano d'Abruzzo
Started in Gianni Masciarelli's grandfather's basement, Villa Gemma is the wine that announced Abruzzo to the world, showcasing what the region and grapes of Abruzzo could produce. Villa Gemma Montepulciano Riserva is the only Italian wine with 14 consecutive Tre Bicchieri awards and, more importantly, was the wine that established Abruzzo as capable of making truly distinct, extraordinary wines. Villa Gemma Montepulciano Riserva is a powerfully - almost undeniably - intense wine of character and complexity, with deep fruit and earthy, spicy secondary charachteristics that could only come from the Montepulciano grape in Abruzzo.
Villa Gemma Abruzzo Bianco
Abruzzo Bianco
While the Villa Gemma Montepulciano was the wine that announced Abruzzo to the world, the Bianco, created just a year later, further defined what the region and grapes of Abruzzo could produce. This wine, first released in 1985, speaks to the white grape varieties specific to the region and has become on of the most exciting wines produced at the estate.
Villa Gemma Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo
Abruzzo Cerasuolo
Perhaps the finest rosé production area in Italy, and one of the few appellations dedicated only to rosé, Cerasuolo has a long history of producing serious rosé, and showcasing how well the Montepulciano grape is adapted to rosé. Masciarelli first produced this wine in 1986, only 5 years after the winery was founded. With deep fruit and structure but no shortage of pleasure, it is a rosé you can take to the dinner table.

Marina Cvetić
Marina Cvetić is a Serbian-born vintner who has spent decades helping shape Abruzzo into one of Italy's most respected wine regions. She met Gianni Masciarelli in 1987, and their partnership, both personal and professional, pushed the estate toward international recognition; in 1991, Gianni named a wine after her, which later grew into its own acclaimed line. After Gianni's untimely passing in 2008, Marina took over leadership of Masciarelli, and continues to guide the estate's direction and quality standards today. She now runs the winery alongside her daughter, Miriam Lee Masciarelli.
Miriam Lee Masciarelli
Miriam Lee Masciarelli is Gianni and Marina's eldest daughter, and today leads Masciarelli alongside her mother. Having grown up within the estate, she has taken on the work of carrying its legacy forward, expanding both its production and its reach in international markets. Under her and Marina's shared leadership, the estate has grown its Food Project (olive oil, grappa, and other products), established Castello di Semivicoli as a wine-tourism destination, and broadened distribution through Gianni's Selection. She serves as one of the winery's leading ambassadors, regularly representing Masciarelli and the Villa Gemma line at tastings and events abroad.
