Not All Russian River Valley Wines Are The Same

Tom Marquardt, the syndicated wine columnist for The South Florida Reporter, highlighted key takeaways from a Russian River Valley and Gary Farrell Winery zoom tasting with his readers, as well as tasting notes for the Hallberg Vineyard Pinot Noir 2017 and Russian River Selection Pinot Noir 2017.

The piece explains the differences between the six “neighborhoods” in the area: Middle Reach, Green Valley, Santa Rosa Plains, Laguna Ridge and Sabastopol Hills and Eastern Hills.

Marquardt explains “the goal of the campaign is to get consumers to understand that not all Russian River Valley wines are the same, but instead unique wines that vary according to the range of soils.” He continues, “for Theresa Heredia, winemaker at Gary Farrell since 2012, there couldn’t be a better playground for a pinot noir devotee. Farrell makes single-vineyard pinot noirs and chardonnays from some of the most prestigious growers – Rochioli, Bacigalupi, and Hallberg to name a few.”

The Hallberg Vineyard wine is described as “opulent black cherry and ripe blackberry flavors with hints of olive and tobacco.” Continuing, he says, “big red berry and floral aromas are followed by raspberry and cola flavors with a hint of forest floor and clove” on the Russian River Selection expression. Named for its previous owners, the 100-acre Hallberg Vineyard is today owned and managed by wine industry veterans including vineyard manager Kirk Lokka. Nestled in the Green Valley sub-appellation, the site enjoys refreshing daytime breezes and cool nighttime temperatures. The strong marine influence means less severe daily temperature shifts so the vines never completely shut down, producing fruit with deep, dark color, great structure, silky tannins, darker fruit flavors and earthy characteristics. This blend is a composition of many of the best blocks on this cool, foggy vineyard site, which include clones 667, 777, 828, Pommard and a mysterious “suitcase” selection.
