Ammura
Etna Rosso Contrada 2022
Etna
Ammura Etna Rosso Contrada is the estate’s most age-worthy and refined red, crafted from a small parcel in the Alboretto–Chiuse del Signore Contrada. The grapes come from 20-year-old Nerello Mascalese vines on Etna’s northeast slope at 2,130 ft. Bright ruby with garnet nuances, the wine is fermented in stainless steel and aged 24 months in large oak barrels, enhancing depth and elegance. Late-ripening and sensitive to terroir this Nerello Mascalese exhibits refined structure, medium body, and ethereal minerality. Aromas of cherry, pomegranate, and red berries mingle with volcanic ash, Mediterranean herbs, and gentle dark spices. The palate is elegant, energetic, and harmonious, with silky tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, persistent finish that captures the essence of Etna’s slopes.
VINEYARD
The Etna Rosso Contrada comes from the Contrada Alboretto vineyard in Chiuse del Signore on northeast slopes at 2,130 ft. Planted primarily with 20-year-old Nerello Mascalese using spur cordon pruning and 4,200 plants per hectare, yields rarely exceed 6,000 kg per hectare. The estate also includes two small plots of ancient vines. Fertile volcanic soils and sea-facing exposure produce grapes of elegance, minerality, and true Etna character.
WINEMAKING
The grapes are destemmed and macerated in stainless steel, fermenting 12–15 days at 64–72°F with daily pump-overs. After fermentation, the wine is racked, and the pomace gently pressed. Natural malolactic fermentation follows. The wine then ages 6 months in stainless steel and 24 months in 20-hectoliter oak barrels, developing structure, elegance, and refined complexity while preserving the bright red fruit and minerality that reflect Etna’s unique volcanic terroir.
VINTAGE
Frequent early-summer heat waves and drought pressure raised concerns across Etna’s slopes, accelerating ripening and demanding careful canopy and water-stress management. A near-ideal late-season stretch stabilized conditions, bringing grapes to harvest healthy and fully mature, with excellent sanitary quality and strong phenolic development. The best 2022s combine ripe red fruit and savory spice with Etna’s signature volcanic lift, fine tannins and balanced acidity, delivering depth without heaviness and the structure for aging.
