VINEYARD

The Nipozzano estate spans over 1,500 acres of mountainous forest, olive groves, an olive mill, cattle-grazing land, vineyards, a winery, and the historic Castello . It is an incredible ecosystem, producing not only outstanding wines, but also some of the finest olive oil in Italy (the Laudemio Frescobaldi). The vineyards roll up and down the hillsides surrounding the castle at an elevation range between 250 and 400 meters, with exposures from southeast to southwest. The Montesodi vineyard is located 400 metres above sea level, planted in schist soils with a magnificent south-west exposure

WINEMAKING

After hand-sorting, this wine ferments in stainless steel tanks with frequent pump-overs, especially during the beginning of fermentation. It then ages in large wooden barrels for four years, followed by a year in bottle.

VINTAGE

The 2022 Chianti vintage began with a cool, dry winter and warm, early spring, followed by a hot summer that prompted some irrigation. Late July and early August rains relieved the drought, ensuring the harvest aligned with average timings. The harvest started in mid-September with international varieties, followed by Sangiovese. Although drought reduced yields, the resulting fruit was concentrated, promising high-quality wines. Despite challenges, the vintage shows great potential for depth and structure.

Montesodi

Chianti Rufina

Montesodi is the ultimate single-vineyard expression of Sangiovese at the Nipozzano estate. The vineyard has always been known as Montesodi due to the stony nature of the soil. It was the estate’s first cru wine, created in 1974, and is not only an extremely elegant and lively Sangiovese, but has the power to age for decades.
