Totara wines are true to their region, expressing typical varietal characters, complexity, and, like the Totara tree, are made for longevity. The fruit and winemaking techniques used in the production of these wines are focused towards producing wines with a point of difference, and to be food-friendly in style.
Winemaker Matthew Ward is Marlborough through and through. Born & bred, Matt refined his craft in some of New Zealeand’s most renowned wineries as well as vintages at Domaine De Montille in Mersault France, Penner-Ash in Oregon and Weingut J.L. Wolf in Wachenheim Germany. Carefully selected parcels of sustainably grown fruit each contribute their own unique qualities, allowing us to produce wines that are a true reflection of their terroir. Matt’s approach to Totara is simple, producing exceptional expressions of Marlborough.

The Totara tree is native to New Zealand, and has long been revered by Maori, as well as early European settlers for its diverse qualities and uses. Due to its length and light weight, the Totara tree was primarly carved into oceon travelling canoes called Waka. A single log could be hollowed, stretching up to 40 meters long and was strong enough to carry a hundred paddlers. The durable wood of the Totara tree was also prized for large ceremonial carvings. Each carving told a story and recorded a piece of history.
