Thistle & Weed
Khakibos 2022
Western Cape
Inspired by the encroaching weeds found amongst the vines grown in the Cape, Etienne and Steph draw parallels between thistles and weeds and the uncompromising tenacity and survival skills of grapevines. Each wine is dedicated to one of their favorite nuisances, using the colloquial Afrikaans term for each, reminding the drinker that these wines are unapologetically Kaaps (Cape Wines).
Vineyard
Stellenbosch (Verdelho – Chenin Blanc) – Piekenierskloof (Palomino) – Wellington (Alvarinho) – Paarl (Chenin Blanc) – Swartland (Chenin Blanc) – Worcester (Fernao Pires), Mix of sandstone and Granitic soil soils
Winemaking
After handpicking the grapes, they are directly pressed into fourth-use 225L French barriques, with only the free run juice used. The wine matures on lees for 10 months before being racked to tank with a small dose of SO2 and bottled with an additional touch of sulfur dioxide.
Vintage
A cool, wet spring delayed budding by 2 weeks. The cool weather also delayed initial shoot growth.
Tasting Note
This is a voluptuous Cape Blend that brings forward a medley of explosive aromatics of citrus, orange blossom and toasted brioche. The richly layered, and expressive palate is kept in line by a searing acidity finishing with a sherbet tang.
