Pride of the Fleurieu Cabernet Sauvignon 2020

Fleurieu Peninsula

Download

This Pride of the Fleurieu Cabernet was grown in the family’s pride and joy, overlooking the Finniss River wetlands, Tony Brooks and Prof. Barbara Santich’s dry-grown ‘Stranger’s Reach Vineyard’ cooled by the Great Southern Ocean and Lake Alexandrina where low rainfall and deep alluvial soils encourage Cabernet to ‘populate or perish’. Selected bunches were hand picked by family and friends in the last week of March and gently crushed into open top fermenters. After 8 days fermentation the wine was then basket pressed into some new but predominately older French Oak Barriques for 18 months maturation and then bottled without filtration or fining, to capture the essence of the vineyard and will reward cellaring and decanting.

Vineyard

Dry-grown pn Tony Brooks’ and Professor Barbara Santich’s Stranger’s Reach Vineyard on the Fleurieu Penninsula overlooking the Finniss River wetlands. This block is cooled by the Great Southern Ocean and Lake Alexandrina where low rainfall and deep alluvial soils encourage Cabernet to ‘populate or perish’. The motif here is always generous fruit and structured tannin in perfect harmony.

Winemaking

Selected bunches were hand picked by family and friends in the third week of April (about 20 days later than in 2020) and gently crushed into open top fermenters. After 8 days of fermentation, the wine was then basket pressed into some new but predominately older French Oak Barriques for 18 months maturation and then bottled without filtration or fining and a reasonable dosage of sulfur.

Vintage

A dry and hot year with low yields, wild fires pressured winemakers and impacted many releases

Tasting Note

Blackberry, cassis and cola on the fragrant nose. Offers an array of dark fruit compote and spice flavors and picks up smokiness with air, along with a floral nuance. Finishes sweet and long, with resonating spiciness and gentle tannic grip.
