E. Guigal St. Joseph 2018 (92 VM)
“Deep magenta. Dark berry preserves, olive, cracked pepper and a hint of licorice on the fragrant nose. Offers supple, appealingly jammy blackberry, cherry preserve and spicecake flavors that become livelier as the wine opens up. Rounded tannins lend shape to a long, smoky finish that leaves candied licorice and dark fruit liqueur notes behind. This is a distinctly ample rendition of this bottling, and it will stand up to the richest, red meat preparations. Aged for two years in used oak barrels.” – J.R 12/22
Saint-Joseph today is one of the most exciting appellations in the Rhone Valley, and dare we say all of France. The work by leading producers such as Guigal, energy from young growers, and recognition (really, re-discovery) of sites capable of making wines of extraordinary depth and complexity; of the same family as its famous neighbor in Hermitage, but with a distinct suppleness and elegance.
Rhône Valley, France
