Wine Spectator senior editor Bruce Sanderson reports on his prior visit to Burgundy for his much anticipated annual barrel-tasting of the young wines. The 2018 vintage was the warmest year yet for Burgundy, with average temperatures a full 2° Celsius higher than normal. As a result, the vintage became a balanced act between high sugars and ripe tannins; allowing for winemakers to carefully showcase their individual abilities.
After visiting nearly 300 esteemed estates, Sanderson recommends several of his top 2018 burgundies, including several from Lucien Le Moine . The feature includes a short interview with winemaker Mounir Saouma, who provided insight to the progress of the wines at the time of tasting “At pressing [in October], the wines showed terroir […] By March, they all tasted the same. Just now [in January] they are beginning to show the vineyard character again, the purity of each place.”
