Paternoster Synthesi Aglianico del Vulture 2017 (90 VM)

Bright medium red-ruby color. Perfumed nose offers red cherry, rose, violet and spicy oak. Juicy, spicy and inky, with nicely concentrated sour red cherry fruit and graphite nuances lifted by a floral element. A peppery, wild hint extends the firm finish, which shows a very restrained sweetness and a youthfully chewy texture. This struck me as much better (more graceful and riper) than the 2016 Synthesi.”

Volcanic wines are currently a hot topic among wine critics and enthusiasts worldwide, and Paternoster is very much of the moment: it is a volcanic wine in the literal sense of the term and stands on an extinct volcano. Paternoster is located in the relatively unknown southern Italian region of Basilicata, on the slopes surrounding Mount Vulture, and has long been considered one of the region’s most important wineries.
