Decanter’s James Button reports on the 2020 harvest in Italy, which unlike the chaotic year the rest of us have been having, looks to be like a successful vintage for many producers. Currently, harvest is underway in many regions with early varieties already in winery and later varieties are nearly ready to be picked.
Button interviewed Marchese Lamberto Frescobaldi of Montalcino’s Tenuta Luce, who exclaimed that “‘It is important to be ready to pick at just the right moment. We started harvesting our Sangiovese on 18 September, but we will wait a few more days for the clusters dedicated to the cru of Luce Brunello. We are very positive: the fruit is healthy and shows great aromatic potential. We fully believe that 2020 will be a beautiful vintage for our Brunello.”
Similarly Button spoke with Tommasi’s Giancarlo Tommasi, whose wineries span Lombardy, Veneto, Puglia and Basilicata: “On 18 August we began the harvest in the Oltrepò Pavese: a splendid day and splendid grapes! We also monitored on a daily basis the final stage of ripening of the Pinot Grigio at our Prunea estate in Vapolicella Classica, the harvest for which began on 26 August […]On the other hand, for the Vermentino at Poggio al Tufo [Tuscany] and for the Fiano at Surani [Puglia], the harvest started in the first week of September. After checking the state of ripeness of the fruit every day, we have been picking the grapes for our Lugana at the Le Fornaci Estate since 14 September.”

Wine writer Peter Hoyne wrote a detailed feature story on the region of Tuscany for the Chicago Wine Press, and featured two beautiful reviews of 2017 Tenuta Luce and 2015 Tenuta Luce Brunello di Montalcino.
The wine reviews begin with Luce 2017, the 25th anniversary edition from the winery with a commemorative label. The write up delves into the winemaking and blend of this wine before offering tasting notes. Hoyne writes, “a concentrated opaque color opens to a bouquet of violets and rose petals supported by a core of fresh black currants. Within this modern framework are layers of spices knit together with graphite, star anise and hint of minerality on the finish…A very memorable and youthful wine at this early stage of its development.”
Hoyne offers readers background on the grape sourcing and ageability of the much heralded 2015 vintage. He continues by adding, “this deep ruby wine offers a wealth of macerated black fruits and dark toffee undertones. Within the core is a liqueur-like texture and richness to the wine that lasts for minutes.”

Town & Country selected Chateau Montelena Napa Valley Chardonnay 2017 and Tenuta Luce Lucente 2018 in the publication’s annual list of Valentine’s Day wine recommendations.
Writers Lauren Hubbard and Sam Dangremond reason, “what better to celebrate a romance for the history books than the chardonnay that put Napa Valley on the map?” They add that the Montelena Napa Valley Chardonnay is “filled with the flavors of ripe core fruit and a whiff of floral, its creaminess would be a lovely foil to Valentine’s confections.”
Master Sommelier Andrea Robinson weighs in on the Tenuta Luce Lucente blend of the classic Tuscan grape Sangiovese with Merlot. She says, “this wine is Italian amore in a glass—lusty with red berry, savory spice and red licorice notes.”

Pix.wine published an article encouraging consumers to change things up next time they need to purchase a bottle and explore the world of Italian wines, including Tenuta Luce della Vite “Lucente” 2018. The writer explains, “a great Italian substitute for a California Cabernet Sauvignon wine with deep color and lots of extracted fruit is a Toscana I.G.T. or Super Tuscan, which are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sangiovese blends.”
After recommending Lucente, she explains, “this wine is the affordable little brother of Luce, a Super Tuscan born of a collaboration between Marchese Lamberto Frescobaldi and Robert Mondavi, and the first wine from Montalcino that blended Sangiovese and Merlot grapes. Today the project belongs solely to Frescobaldi. This deeply colored, ruby red offers a bold aroma profile with notes of blackberry, dried fruit, vanilla, and cocoa. It is full bodied, very smooth, and sits between dry and off dry, with a good backbone of acidity. Let it breathe for a few moments in a decanter before serving.” Read the full story HERE
