In Decanter’s “Sonoma County: The 2022 Vintage Report,” the yet-to-be-released Far Mountain Montecillo Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon earned a place among the top 25 wines of the vintage. This is a remarkable achievement for a relatively new winery, standing shoulder to shoulder with benchmark producers such as Occidental, Williams Selyem, Failla, Phelps, Hirsch, Arnot-Roberts, among others—an accolade that underscores Far Mountain’s rapid ascent and world-class potential.
The report by Sonoma correspondent Ana Carolina Quintela describes 2022 as a year defined by the “density and concentration of flavours and aromas” across Sonoma’s 60,000 vineyard acres. While marked by a challenging September heatwave, the best wines combined remarkable depth, intensity, and balance. Far Mountain’s Montecillo Cabernet is a prime example—and Decanter’s full 95-point review is shared below.
Far Mountain Montecillo Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Moon Mountain, Sonoma County 2022 – 95 points
Beautiful forest aromas beguile from the Far Mountain Montecillo Cabernet, perched nearly 2,000 ft (600m) along the ridge that divides the Napa and Sonoma appellations. Bergamot and fir tips, wild blue alpine berries, a touch of forest floor, and a bassline of gorgeous sweet violets. The palate is subtle and beautifully integrated. Sweet huckleberries, pine sap, mint leaves, and a dash of wild alpine herbs. This is a Cabernet of place, refinement and elegance. Tasted from bottle #4.
