The greatest-ever champagne vintage?

In a report on an envy-inducing comparative tasting for Jancis Robinson, Andy Howard, MW explores the long-standing debate around the greatness of the 1996 Champagne vintage by placing it alongside the more understated yet increasingly impressive 1995 vintage in a horizontal. Among some of the greats tasted here, Howard includes wines from both Champagne Bollinger and Champagne AYALA: Bollinger’s RD Extra Brut (1995 and 1996), and AYALA’s Perle d’Ayala (1995 and 1996).

By tasting the two vintages side-by-side, the report highlights how time has reshaped perceptions of these celebrated years, revealing that the underdog 1995 has quietly evolved into a compelling and beautifully balanced vintage in its own right. Of the Bollinger RD Extra Brut 1995, Howard writes “Super-complex nose! Deeper in hue – looks like it has age but, on the palate, it is so fresh!” The whole endeavor also underscores the remarkable age-worthiness of both Champagne Bollinger and AYALA; the wines continue to evolve with complexity and harmony after decades in bottle.

We’re thrilled to see this remarkable houses included in the conversation alongside other greats like Krug and Dom Perignon. Check out the full article, including excellent tasting notes, HERE or below.
