Frescobaldi in Oregon

In the September 30 issue of Wine Spectator, reviewer Tim Fish spotlights Domaine Roy & Fils in his feature “Frescobaldi in Oregon,” chronicling how Marchesi Frescobaldi president Lamberto Frescobaldi discovered the Dundee Hills estate and set out to shape its future. Since the first vintage release in 2015, Fish notes, “I’ve been reviewing Domaine Roy Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays since the first vintage release in 2015 and every bottling has earned an outstanding 90 points or higher on Wine Spectator’s 100-point scale.”

Frescobaldi, whose family’s winemaking roots stretch back over 700 years in Italy, describes his vision for building the brand with patience and authenticity: “A wine has to be good, but it also needs to have a soul, an identity, that you’re able to capture by focusing on the vineyard year after year. You want people to recognize the site rather than the person who made the wine, and that is what we are trying to do also here… This world is about patience. You will have ups and downs, and hopefully you’ll have more ups to balance the downs, but there are always downs. It’s all about taking the long view.”

The winery farms two estate vineyards—Iron Filbert in the Dundee Hills and Quartz Acorn in Yamhill-Carlton—totaling 43 acres of Pinot Noir and 5 acres of Chardonnay, with plans to expand by another 20 acres at Quartz Acorn. Italian winemaker Jacopo Cancianti joined the team in 2023, ensuring each lot is vinified with precision to highlight the unique terroir of the Willamette Valley.

This piece captures both the remarkable quality already in the glass and the thoughtful, long-term vision for the future—not only at Domaine Roy, but across all Frescobaldi estates, whether they are centuries-old in Tuscany or new ventures in Oregon.
