Quinta do Noval Colheita Tawny Port 2003 (92 WA)
The 2003 Colheita Tawny Port is a typical field blend of grapes like Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Tinto Cão bottled in May 2019 with 124 grams of sugar, 21% alcohol and a long cork. These are often bottled on demand. This has been seen before, but this is a new bottling. In this very warm year, this has surprising density, richness of flavors and general concentration for a somewhat young Tawny (although it is becoming older, obviously, as time marches on). There’s less surprising power and a touch of herbs on the finish. It’s intense and lush, finishing with a bang. This is more intense than the 2005, its sibling this issue, but perhaps not quite as well balanced, as fresh or as focused.

Colheita is a Vintage Tawny Port. Wheras Tawnies with an indication of age show the house style, Vintage Tawnies show the personality of the vintage year. Colheita spends its entire life in barrel until the moment of bottling. On the nose they are fresh, powerful and fruit-forward, with balanced acidity. On the palate they have a nutty, oxidized character with a seductively smooth finish.

One of the oldest port houses, Quinta do Noval is also arguably the greatest. It is unique among top port houses in that most of the ports are made from estate-grown fruit and, notably, all of the vintage Noval wines are from the single Quinta do Noval vineyard.
