Mitolo Savitar Shiraz 2014 (95 JD)

“The 2014 Shiraz Savitar comes from a tiny, extremely rocky part of the Lopresti Vineyard (from a block called the Chinese Block) and 40+-year-old vines. It’s destemmed and spends 18 months in 100% new French oak. It’s a beautiful 2014 offering notes of ripe dark fruits, iron, tobacco, and olive. It has an almost Hermitage-like style, full-bodied richness, sweet tannin, and a great finish, all making for a stunning McLaren Vale Shiraz that will keep for 10-15 years.”

“Savitar” is a mythical dragon-like monster, and this wine is so named because of the impression Frank Mitolo and Ben Glaetzer had upon tasting one particular lot in the Willunga vineyard. They were so blown away they decided to make a Shiraz from just the small lot, and Savitar was created.
