E. Guigal Hermitage 2015 (94 W&S)

“This is built for the long haul, with 36 months in oak barrels, half of them new, contributing plenty of oak spice, sweetness and polish. Its complexity comes up as the wood notes vanish into a warm, ripe mouthful of plummy flavor. Deep and dense, the wine takes on notes of roses and lilies, caramel and sun-warmed stones, details that feel robust and well-formed. Hide this away for at least eight years before opening.”

Hermitage is one of France’s most spectacular and famous appellations, producing small quantities of extraordinarily intense and ageworthy red wine and tiny amounts of dry white. The entire vineyard consists of 309 acres planted on a single granite hillside on the banks of the Rhône. The Hermitage Rouge is the example of a racy wine, that manages to remain seductive.
